The Murder of James Pitt

On the evening of October 1, 1989, James Pitt was found dead in his home in Durham, North Carolina. He had been shot in the head. His wife, Carolyn, was the only other person in the house at the time. She told police that she had heard a noise downstairs and had gone to investigate. She said that she found her husband lying on the floor, and that she had called 911.

Police quickly began to suspect Carolyn Pitt. They found that she had a history of domestic violence, and that she had threatened her husband in the past. They also found that she had a financial motive for killing him. James Pitt was a wealthy man, and Carolyn stood to inherit a large sum of money if he died.

Carolyn Pitt was arrested and charged with her husband's murder. She was convicted in 1991 and sentenced to life in prison.

The Children's Crusade

In the years after Carolyn Pitt's conviction, her children came to believe that she was innocent. They began to investigate the case themselves, and they found evidence that suggested that their mother had been wrongfully convicted.

In 2003, Carolyn's children launched a campaign to clear her name. They created a website, they held press conferences, and they met with politicians and law enforcement officials. Their efforts eventually caught the attention of the North Carolina Innocence Project, which took on Carolyn's case.

In 2017, the North Carolina Innocence Project filed a motion for a new trial for Carolyn Pitt. The motion was based on new evidence that suggested that she had not been present at the time of her husband's murder.

In 2019, a judge granted Carolyn Pitt a new trial. She was released from prison after spending 26 years behind bars.

The Truth Remains Elusive

The Pitt family saga is a complex and fascinating story that raises questions about justice, family, and the nature of truth. The case is still ongoing, and the truth about what happened on that fateful night in 1989 may never be known.

But one thing is for sure: the Pitt family saga is a reminder that the truth is often elusive, and that justice can sometimes be denied.
