The Routemaster bus is an iconic symbol of London. It was first introduced in 1954, becoming the standard bus for the city. For a long time, it was a common sight on the streets of the city, but this started to change in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In 1979, the Conservative government was elected, and one of their policies was to deregulate the bus industry. This meant that private companies were now allowed to operate buses in London, competing with the publicly-owned London Transport.

The of competition led to a number of changes in the bus industry. One of the most significant was the decline of the Routemaster bus. Private companies found that the Routemaster was too expensive to operate, as it required a conductor as well as a driver. As a result, they began to introduce new, one-person operated buses.

London Transport also began to phase out the Routemaster bus. In 1982, they announced that they would be withdrawing the Routemaster from all but a few heritage routes. This decision was met with protests from the public, who were keen to save the iconic bus.

Despite the protests, London Transport went ahead with their plans, and the Routemaster bus was gradually withdrawn from service. By 1984, it had been withdrawn from all but three routes: the 15, the 98 and the 23.

The Routemaster bus continued to operate on these three routes until 2005, when they were finally withdrawn from service. However, the Routemaster bus has not been forgotten. It is still seen as an iconic symbol of London, and there are a number of heritage routes that still operate using Routemaster buses.

The Routemaster Bus Today

Today, the Routemaster bus is a popular tourist attraction. There are a number of heritage routes that still operate using Routemaster buses, and these routes are very popular with tourists. The Routemaster bus is also a popular choice for weddings and other special occasions.
